GENERAL INFORMATION

1. ENGINE IDENTIFICATION

Caterpillar engines are identified with Serial NumbersandArrangement Numbers. In some cases, ModificationNumbers are alsoused. The serial number plate whichshows these numbers is mountedon the engine.

Caterpillar dealers need this information to determinewhichcomponents were included on the engine whenit was assembled at thefactory. This permits accurateidentification of replacement partnumbers.

2. ORDERING PARTS

Quality Caterpillar replacement parts are availablefromCaterpillar dealers throughout the world. Theirparts inventoriesare up to date and include allparts normally required to protectyour investmentin Caterpillar Engines. Dealers may offer repairkitsor remanufactured parts to allow selection of the mosteffectiverepair alternative for a particular situation. Whenordering parts,your order should specify the quantity,part number, part name, andthe serial number/productidentification number of the engine forwhich the partsare needed.

3. PARTS MANUAL ORGANIZATION

Product information in this manual is presentedas "informationelements" that represent all of thecomponents for the specificmodel. An EngineArrangement is an example of an informationelement.The information elements are organized alphabeticallybypart name and secondarily by part number withineach major sectionof the manual.

4. TABLE OF CONTENTS

A table of contents (TOC) is found at the beginning ofthemanual. The TOC lists each section of the manual witha completelist of all information elements organized asthey appear in themanual. Page numbers are providedfor quick reference to detailedparts identificationillustrations and serviceable consistlists.

5. MAINTENANCE PARTS INDEX

The Maintenance Parts Index, located near thebeginning of themanual, references most frequentlyused maintenance part numbers,providing description,quantity, usage and page number. Thisinformation isorganized alphabetically by part description.

6. INDEX

The index located near the front of the manual is analphabeticallisting of all information elements includedin the manual. Pagenumbers are provided for quickreference to detailed partsidentification illustrations andserviceable consist lists.

7. PART NUMBER INDEX

A numerical index listing all part numbers and thecorrespondingpage number(s) appears at the back ofthe manual.

8. CAPTIONS

Captions located at the beginning each informationelementidentify the part number and part namealong with additionaldescriptive information. S/Ninformation found in each captionshould be usedto select correct information for a specificengine.Field replacement options, identification ofoptionalattachment components, and where used ("partof")information is also provided.

Numbers shown in the Ref No column correspondto numbers used inthe associated graphic(s). Analphabetic suffix may be added to areference number toidentify lower level consist items. Numbersshown in theGraphic Ref column refer to the graphic numberidentifierdisplayed in the lower left corner of each illustration.TheGraphic Ref number may be used in combination withthe item RefNo to determine the correct part number.There may be intentionalomission of a Ref No in aconsist list as information is updated toreflect the latestserviceable part numbers.

Los motores Caterpillar se identifican con NmerosdeIdentificacin del Producto (PIN). El motor se identificaadems conNmeros de Configuracin y en algunoscasos, Nmeros de Modificacin.Estos nmeros estnen las placas de identificacin que seencuentranmontadas en el motor.

Los distribuidores Caterpillar necesitan esta informacinparadeterminar que componentes fueron incluidos enel motor cuando loensamblaron en la fbrica. Estosnmeros permiten identificar conexactitud los nmerosde piezas de repuesto.

2. COMO PEDIR REPUESTOS

Las piezas de repuesto Caterpillar de calidad estndisponibles delos distribuidores Caterpillar en todoel mundo. Sus existenciasactualizadas incluyentodas las piezas normalmente requeridasparaproteger su inversin en motores Caterpillar. Losdistribuidorespueden tener juegos de reparacin opiezas remanufacturadas parapermitir la seleccinde la mejor alternativa de reparacin en un casoenparticular.
