Well not only did I lose out on the Ward but also the mount, BATTERY BOX, regulator etc. The whole shootin' match. I took the extra time to do a google search and found the discussion on the Aeronca list that gave the Johnson/Evenrude part numbers. The good news is the seller thinks there's another one that might be available on the field.......without the extra goodies. I think Doug has all the fiddly bitts in stock though.

Hey Dan,

Bummer!! The Ward generators don't turn up that often. You really do need to jump at one when it appears.

From the Ward Aero manual:

Generator 5lb. 12 oz.

Regulator 1lb. 8oz.

Prop 10oz.

Mount varies

So, you're probably looking at 12lbs. or so with the mount for the Ward. To me the Ward looks better on any classic airplane. The BPE is certainly functional and a great addition if you need a generator... but they just look weird. And everyone knows it's more important to look good. :)

The Ward generator is the same unit that was found on some outboard motors. Parts are still available and many small engine shops can still rebuild one easily. The BPE is in production so parts are no worry.

Don't rule out using a total loss electrical system. Digital comms and nav gear don't suck many electrons. It's ironic that electrical loads are decreasing rapidly with changing technology while generator/alternator units are getting smaller with ever increasing outputs i.e the PlanePower 50A alternator.

It's sold. Ten minutes before I called. He who hesitates is lost.

It's either this one or the Basic Aircraft Products BPE-14. If one ignores the difference in price does either generator have an advantage? The BPE-14 for instance weighs 5 pounds and puts out 6 amps. Anybody know what the Ward weighs?
