If you’re planning a trip to downtown Chicago, whether you’re visiting from out of town or you’re a local wanting a staycation, figuring out where to stay is a big deal. It can make or break your trip.
Fortunately, there are lots of options offering a broad range of experiences.
Downtown Chicago offers everything from hostels to luxury hotels. I’ve lived in the city and its suburbs since 2001, and although I’m a local, I’ve stayed in dozens of hotels, many of them while researching my book, Living Landmarks of Chicago.

Because there are so many choices, I’m keeping this intro brief. Instead, we’ll get into a brief overview of the neighborhoods, then we’ll get to the best hotels in downtown Chicago.
Where to Stay in Downtown Chicago
Overview of Downtown Chicago Neighborhoods
If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it – and said it – a gazillion times: Chicago is a city of neighborhoods.
Downtown Chicago is comprised of multiple neighborhoods: the Loop, West Loop, South Loop, River North, and Streeterville/Magnificent Mile.
Each of these downtown areas has a distinct character, its own vibe. Here’s a brief run down of each of these neighborhoods and some of their major attractions.
Please note that locations provided for the neighborhoods are approximate and shift like Chicago weather.
The Loop
The Loop is the heart of downtown Chicago, known for its iconic architecture, theater district, and major business centers.
It’s bounded by the Chicago River to the north and west, Lake Michigan to the east, and Roosevelt Road to the south.
Stay in this neighborhood if: You want to be at the center of it all, close to the theatre district and major attractions like Millennium Park, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Chicago Riverwalk.
River North
Just north of the Chicago River, this trendy area is home to numerous art galleries, restaurants, and nightlife spots.
Stay in this neighborhood if: You appreciate fine art, enjoy late nights out, or are visiting for a trade show at the Merchandise Mart. It’s also great for foodies, as the area boasts some of Chicago’s best restaurants.
Magnificent Mile/Streeterville
Streeterville, anchored by the famed Magnificent Mile, is Chicago’s most famous shopping district and is lined with high-end shops and boutiques.
Stay in this neighborhood if: You’re looking for a luxury experience, plan to do a lot of shopping, or want easy access to both downtown and the Gold Coast.
This is also a great place to stay if you’re looking for a beach vacation, with access to Ohio Street Beach and Oak Street Beach.
Gold Coast
North of the Magnificent Mile, this historic district is known for its elegant mansions, luxury shopping at upscale boutiques, and quiet tree-lined residential streets.
Stay in this neighborhood if: You prefer a more residential feel while still being close to downtown amenities.
It’s ideal for those who enjoy walking through beautiful neighborhoods, high-end shopping on Oak Street, and a slightly quieter atmosphere.
West Loop
West of the Chicago River, this formerly industrial area has transformed into a hip neighborhood known for its acclaimed restaurants, art galleries, and converted loft spaces.
Stay in this neighborhood if: You’re a foodie looking to experience Chicago’s hottest restaurants, enjoy a more local vibe, or have tickets to an event at United Center.
It’s great for those who prefer boutique hotels and want to see a different side of Chicago.
South Loop
South of the Loop proper, this area includes Museum Campus, Soldier Field, and McCormick Place. It offers a mix of cultural attractions, green spaces, and residential areas.
Stay in this neighborhood if: You’re attending a conference, planning a visit to the Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium or the Field Museum, or attending a sports event or concert at Soldier Field.
