Northwest Health is urging men to schedule their annual wellness exam during Men's Health Week.

The system with hospitals in Valparaiso, LaPorte and Knox cites research that 44% of men don't get an annual physical and 60% of men don't see the doctor if they suspect something is wrong.

“Don’t wait until the ‘check engine’ light flashes to take care of your health. Just like cars, men’s bodies need routine and preventive maintenance, too” said Jennifer DeFauw, family medicine nurse practitioner. “As fathers, husbands, coworkers, friends, men owe it to the people who care about them to take care of themselves—not just when they’re sick.”

She encourages men to watch for common conditions like heart disease, prostate cancer, urinary incontinence, low testosterone and depression.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States. One out of eight men will suffer from prostate cancer. And men have a suicide rate that's four times higher than women.

“While you may not feel comfortable discussing health concerns or below-the-belt issues with buddies, it should not be embarrassing to talk to a health care provider,” DeFauw said. “Serious health issues can often be addressed and are easier to treat when found early.”

Primary care doctors screen for a number of conditions, including body mass index, blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol, vaccinations, mental health, testicular or prostate exams, alcohol and tobacco use, and diet and exercise habits.
